Chichester reborn

After almost 500 years of neglect Chichester could have easily been lost forever, but for a decision by King Alfred the Great to create a chain of defences (burhs) against a growing threat - the Vikings.

Despite Chichester's ruinous state the defensive walls could be repaired and the town refortified.

Chichester reborn

It would have taken months, if not years, to simply remove the vegetation from the walls, patch up the crumbled sections and repair the gates. Nevertheless the task was completed and over time the renovation of the town followed.

The town of Chichester was reborn and grew to become a financial and religious centre. A royal mint was established and the population soon grew to around 1500.
